This slicer was forged from a solid bar of high carbon W2 tool steel. The differentially hardened blade has a hazy hardening line ("hamon"), and the hexagonal section handle is carved from semi fossilised oak that collapsed into the Anglian fens some 5000 years ago when water levels rose and swamped Eastern England.

There are some forging marks (see 2nd picture) on the "off" side of the blade, as it was forged close to finished dimensions.
